In a recent sermon, Pastor Tomi Arayomi shared a powerful story from the Royal Warri Crusade in Nigeria and its a story that beautifully illustrates humility and servant leadership.
Before the crusade, Pastor Tomi invited the king of the region to attend. The king’s response was unexpected.
He said, “I’m not coming. It’s not my crusade it’s Jesus’ crusade. If I show up, people might take their attention off Jesus and put it on me, and I can’t have that.”
Prophet Tomi replied, “Your Majesty, wouldn’t it be a powerful sight for your people to see their king worshipping the King of Kings?” After a short pause, the king sent a smiling emoji and agreed to come.
A few minutes later, Pastor Tomi noticed a long police convoy with sirens blaring sixteen cars deep. At first, he thought, This must be the king. But as the convoy stopped, it turned out to be another official making a grand entrance with a small army of security personnel.
Then, quietly and without any show, the king arrived. No sirens. Just one modest car. Only two security personnel. He quietly took his seat, placed his traditional cap on his head, and devoted himself to worshipping Jesus.
That moment spoke volumes.
In his sermon, Pastor Tomi reflected that he has met leaders even men of God who are harder to see than the Lord Himself. He once waited a whole year just to meet one pastor. But here was a king, a man of true earthly authority, humbly accessible and focused on worship.
As Pastor Tomi reminded the congregation:
We are here to serve the people, not master them.
We are men of God, not gods of men.
The King of Kings Himself came to serve. If He could humble Himself, how much more should we?
